We had some lovely weather this summer, in fact, July was the hottest month on record. Even in early June at the Wetwang Scarecrow Festival the weather was glorious. I had a fantastic time visiting this Festival and you will find an article about this on page 38.
On the front cover this time is a fine wooden 18th century doll. Wooden dolls are of course extremely rare to find, and this doll has been passed down in one particular family line for generations. Although not in its original clothes, her later clothes are still in good condition. Her original silk bonnet has kept her real hair in tact, and her face is in remarkable condition for such an early doll. The front cover background is a Sampler of Map of England dated 1799, by Jane Morgan from Kingsdown Lodge. Usually these Samplers were made by young girls, and it is a pity that the girl’s age is missing from this one.
Also in this issue is a nice knitting pattern for a Sasha doll designed by Jane Woodbridge. This is just one of Jane’s lovely designs. Hard plastic dolls are favoured by many collectors today and there are some interesting dolls from Jackie Plumb’s collection and Chris Wimsey’s article on Large British Dolls. Another two features of interest, one by expert Gillian Trotter author of “Cloth Dolls & Soft Toys” on Nora Wellings Dolls.
For all those fashion doll lovers, in this issue there is a beautiful doll to be won called “Byzantine” from the Tyler Wentworth Collection. Make sure you don’t’ miss out as the closing date is the 30th September 2006.
